Just finished the first series of the Danish show The Killing (or Forbrydelsen) and I can’t really recommend it enough. Over the twenty hour-long episodes it proved to be consistently intelligent, atmospheric, unnerving and thrilling, kind of like a wonderful mix between Twin Peaks and The Wire. It’s been remade into an American version but from what I’ve seen, you don’t really want to go near it. Stick to the original. This is a wonderfully acted and very intelligent series that offers an extremely compelling murder-mystery as its main narrative arc (Twin Peaks), but offers critical subtexts that range from political subterfuge, to mishandlings and corruption within the justice system (The Wire). It certainly covers an impressive amount of ground. Series two is coing out soon and I can’t wait. Best show I’ve watched since The Sopranoes. Check it out.
